My recent wandering somewhat satisfied my two major cravings. First of wandering(though I already feel the urge of being out again) and the second one of relishing the most favourite drink in the world-COFFEE.
The saga of Indian coffee is truly mesmerising and it will leave you spellbound just like it did to me. Coffee was first brought to India by the legendary saint Baba Budan who brought 7,yes just 7 seeds on his return pilgrimage from Mecca around 1600 AD by hiding them in his chest belt and planted them in his backyard on the Chandragiri hills of Karnataka which gradually spread accross the hills and mountain ranges and gave birth to the Indian coffee.
Around 150 Kms from Mangalore,Chikmagalur is a crowded town but it also has many places one can explore. It’s a trekkers paradise. Mt.Mullayanagiri is the crown of Chikmagalur and should be on the list.. Also a visit to baba Budangiri dedicated to the saint is worthy. Chikmagalur offers river rafting facilities and safaris which i couldn’t enjoy due to time restraints. Numerous coffee estates along the way are a joy to watch.A religious tour to the nearby glorious temples is a must (which I will be covering in my next post). A trip here should be well planned as travelling around can be tideous and time consuming..
A tour to the Coffee museum is definitely worth taking and will enlighten you about your hot cuppa. You can visit the coffee factories and buy pure filter coffee from there as well as from the various outlets around the town.If trekking is your thing or may be you just want to cozy out sipping freshly brewed coffe Chikmangalur is the place for you.
